Kidney Yin Deficiency reflects depletion of the cooling, moistening, and nourishing aspect of the Kidney system. It commonly develops gradually and may show as soreness or weakness of the lower back and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, dry mouth or throat, night sweating, heat in the palms and soles, and disturbed sleep. Reproductive, urinary, or developmental signs can appear according to age and context. The tongue is often red with little coating, sometimes with cracks, and the pulse may be thin and rapid, especially at the rear positions. The pattern is understood as insufficient Kidney essence and Yin failing to nourish the body and restrain Yang, allowing signs of empty Heat to emerge when the deficiency becomes pronounced.
