Modern Research Perspective
Patchouli oil contains sesquiterpenes and other volatile constituents. Experimental studies have examined antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, gastrointestinal, and neurobehavioral pathways, but effects depend on chemotype, route, and concentration.
Human clinical evidence is limited. Topical irritation, allergy, ingestion toxicity, pregnancy, inhalation exposure, interactions, and long-term safety require careful assessment.
Traditional Function
Patchouli Oil is aromatic, pungent, and warm in traditional practice. It is used to transform dampness, regulate qi, relieve nausea, and address summer-damp or digestive discomfort patterns. Essential-oil concentration is distinct from the whole herb.
