Modern Research Perspective

Icariin and related flavonoids show bone-forming, vascular, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and endocrine-related activity in cell and animal studies. Human exploratory trials have examined bone density, menopausal symptoms, sexual function, and fatigue, often with standardized extracts or combined preparations. Evidence remains mixed because doses and extracts differ, while possible estrogenic effects, palpitations, insomnia, and drug interactions require caution.

Traditional Function

In traditional Chinese medicine, Epimedium herb is warming and sweet-pungent. It is used to supplement kidney yang, strengthen sinews and bones, dispel wind-dampness, and support weakness, cold limbs, or painful joints in deficiency patterns.
