Modern Research Perspective
Coptis Rhizome contains protoberberine alkaloids, especially berberine, together with other constituents. Cell and animal studies have examined antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, glucose-lipid, cardiovascular, and intestinal mechanisms. Preclinical findings do not establish that the whole herb treats a human disease.
Human studies often use berberine or combined preparations with variable quality and dose. Gastrointestinal effects, drug interactions, and potential effects on glucose and lipid medicines require attention; independent efficacy and long-term safety of the single herb remain uncertain.
Traditional Function
In traditional Chinese medicine, Coptis Rhizome is extremely bitter and cold. It is used to clear heat, dry dampness, purge fire, and detoxify. Its use is interpreted according to damp-heat, excessive fire, gastrointestinal heat, or heat-toxin patterns.
