Modern Research Perspective
Chinese Gallnut contains tannins, gallic acid, ellagitannins, and other polyphenols. Cell and animal studies have examined antimicrobial, antioxidant, hemostatic, gastrointestinal, and tissue-repair pathways, but evidence remains preclinical.
Human clinical evidence for a standardized single material is limited. Gastrointestinal irritation, nutrient binding, allergy, interactions, dose, and long-term safety require evaluation.
Traditional Function
Chinese Gallnut is traditionally sour, salty, and cold. It is used to astringe leakage, stop bleeding, reduce diarrhea, and clear selected heat-related conditions. Its tannin-rich nature requires appropriate pattern and dose.
