Modern Research Perspective
Aloe contains anthraquinones, polysaccharides, chromones, and other constituents. Experimental and human studies have examined topical wound care, laxative effects, inflammatory, and metabolic outcomes, but preparations differ greatly.
Anthraquinone laxatives may cause cramping, electrolyte disturbance, and dependence with prolonged use; oral safety, pregnancy, kidney disease, interactions, and preparation quality require caution.
Traditional Function
In traditional Chinese medicine, Aloe is bitter and cold. It is used to clear heat, purge accumulation, promote bowel movement, and address selected liver or inflammatory patterns. Fresh latex, dried material, and purified fractions are distinct identities.
