Modern Research Perspective

Astragalus Root contains polysaccharides, saponins, flavonoids, and other constituents. Cell and animal studies have examined immune, inflammatory, metabolic, renal, cardiovascular, and tissue-repair pathways. Results vary by species, extraction, and dose and remain mainly preclinical.

Human studies are heterogeneous and often use combined interventions or standardized extracts. Possible immune and glucose effects may interact with medicines; independent clinical efficacy, dose, and long-term safety remain incompletely established.

Traditional Function

In traditional Chinese medicine, Astragalus Root is sweet and slightly warm. It is used to tonify Qi, raise yang, strengthen the exterior, promote urination, support tissue recovery, and generate fluids. Its use is interpreted according to Qi deficiency and should be individualized.
