Modern Research Perspective
Danshen Root contains diterpene quinones, phenolic acids, and other constituents. Experimental studies have explored vascular, platelet, inflammatory, antioxidant, cardiac, and hepatic mechanisms. These results are not interchangeable with clinical efficacy of the whole root.
Human studies often involve standardized extracts or combined interventions and show variable quality. Interactions with anticoagulant and antiplatelet medicines are clinically important; dose, preparation, bleeding risk, and long-term safety require professional oversight.
Traditional Function
In traditional Chinese medicine, Danshen Root is bitter and slightly cold. It is used to invigorate blood, dispel blood stasis, cool the blood, and calm irritability. Its use is interpreted according to blood-stasis, heat, cardiovascular, or pain-related patterns.
