Modern Research Perspective

Goji Fruit contains polysaccharides, carotenoids, betaine, flavonoids, and other metabolites. Cell and animal studies have examined antioxidant, immune, metabolic, ocular, and reproductive pathways. A small controlled study of a standardized juice in healthy older adults reported changes in selected immune measures, but the intervention and population do not establish disease treatment efficacy.

Clinical evidence remains limited by small samples, varied preparations, short follow-up, and incomplete quality standardization. Potential interactions, including with anticoagulant therapy, and the relevance of concentrated products require further study.

Traditional Function

In traditional Chinese medicine, Goji Fruit is sweet and neutral. It is used to nourish the Liver and Kidney, replenish essence, moisten the Lungs, and improve vision. Its use is interpreted according to deficiency-related visual symptoms, fatigue, or insufficiency of essence and fluids.
